Catalogue Note
At first glance, it reads as the most overlooked object in the city: a front-load commercial dumpster, weathered and rust-stained, parked at the edge of the lot. On closer inspection, nothing about it was found. 'Modular Waste' is a complete fabrication, built from the ground up by Ryder Studios in collaboration with Gwak Productions (@gwakproductions). No real dumpster was used.
Every signifier of the original was reconstructed by hand: the fork pockets, the reflectors, the industrial casters, the municipal green. The surface was then painted and aged in successive layers to simulate years of weather and use, a deliberate act of deterioration that gives the piece its uncanny authenticity.
The dumpster is the object we keep outside: filthy, discarded, something no one wants to touch. ‘Modular Waste’ brings it inside, into the home, and invites you to lie down in it. What we read as disgusting becomes a place of comfort. The tags, the stickers, the rust and weathering, marks that usually signal neglect, become the artwork itself: a record of the street, recreated by hand.
